Origins

The Balinese come from three migration periods. The first wave of immigrants came from Java and Borneo in prehistoric times and was a proto-Malay stock. The second wave of Bali came slowly over the years from Java during the Hindu period. The third and final wave came from Java, between the 15th and 16th centuries, around the same time as conversion to Islam in Java, causing aristocrats and peasants to flee to Bali after the fall of Hindu Majapahit Kingdom to escape from Mataram. This in turn reshaped Balinese culture into a syncretic form of classical Javanese culture blended with many elements of Bali.

A DNA study in 2005 by Karafet et al., Found that 12% of Y chromosomes of Balinese people probably originated in India, while 84% were probably Austronesian, and 2% were probably Melanesian.

Culture

Balinese culture is a mixture of Balinese Hindu-Buddhist and Balinese customs. This is probably best known for its dance, drama, and sculpture. The island is also known as the Wayang kulit or Shadow play theater. Even in rural and abandoned villages, beautiful temples are a common sight; and so are skilled gamelan players and talented actors. Even palm leaf pieces and neat fruit arrangements made as offerings by Balinese women have an artistic side to them. According to the Mexican art historian José Miguel Covarrubias, artwork created by amateur Balinese artists is considered a form of spiritual offering, and therefore these artists do not care about the acknowledgment of their works. Balinese artists are also skilled in duplicating works of art such as carvings that resemble Chinese deities or decorating vehicles based on what is seen in foreign magazines.

Culture is noted for the use of gamelan in music and in various traditional Balinese events. Each type of music is intended for certain types of events. For example, music for piodalan (birthday celebration) is different from the music used for ceremony metatah (dental milling), as for wedding, (cremation ceremony of death), Melasti (purification ritual) and so on. Various types of gamelan are also determined according to various types of dance in Bali. According to Walter Spies, the art of dancing is an integral part of Balinese life as well as an endless critical element in a series of ceremonies or for personal gain.

Traditionally, showing a woman's breasts is not considered rude. Balinese women are often seen with open breasts; However, the appearance of the thigh is considered impolite. In modern Bali these habits are usually not strictly observed, but visitors visiting Balinese temples are advised to cover their feet.

In the Bali naming system, the rank of a birth or caste is reflected in its name.

Puputan

Puputan is a mass suicide act through a frontal attack in combat, and was first recorded by the Dutch during the colonization of Bali. The last act of bleeding was during the Indonesian War of Independence, with Lieutenant Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai as the leader in the battle of Margarana. The airport in Bali is named after its name for warning.
