Histori

The site was originally started as a demo archive of the Quake playthrough. SDA was formed initially by Nolan "Radix" Pflug from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by joining a site created by Gunnar and Jesse in April 1998. In 2004 after the success of 100% Metroid Prime was run, Radix expanded SDA to include demos from other games. Mike Uyama took over in 2006 as a site administrator. In January 2010, SDA ran its first charity marathon, Classic Games Done Quick, generating over $ 10,000 for CARE.

Content

In March 2018, SDA held a speedrun video of nearly a thousand and three hundred games. All these processes are available for download, and almost all are available in some video quality. This site includes popular video games such as Mega Man , Metroid , The Legend of Zelda , Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog . This site has been featured in many publications such as Electronic Gaming Monthly and G4tv's Attack of the Show! . Some games also appear on episodes of Pure Pwnage .

Submissions to SDA undergo a verification process, in which community members familiar with watch games run and verify run quality both in terms of video quality and game quality, and ensuring it follows the SDA rules. Each run is reviewed by multiple verifiers, which report back to the site's staff; the staff then makes the final decision to accept or not to run it, and the verdict is posted together with the verifiers' answers openly in the forum. Upon receipt, run is encoded in several qualities and added to the update queue; finally, it was posted on the site along with the runner's comments. Some runs also contain a second audio track with comments.

Rules

SDA accepts speedruns in three categories:

  • Segmented, where runs are done in sections using an in-game storage system. These runs typically receive higher supervision as compared to running in other categories, as they are expected to have higher quality because players can retry each part of the game individually as many times as they want.
  • A single segment, where all games are beaten from start to finish in a single sitting. Segment operation is not allowed to reset games, except in cases where reset is required to continue the game.
  • Single segment with reset; as the name suggests, this category is similar to a one-segment operation, but reset is allowed. Not all games qualify for this category; the staff approves or rejects categories for certain games in cases where reset saves enough time during the run of a normal segment.

SDA accepts walks following three different completion terms:%, "pure speed" is executed, where the game is beaten as quickly as possible; 100% run, where players get everything and finish the game; and run low%, where players beat the game with the lowest percentage settlement possible. Other categories, like different versions of the same game, are allowed based on game-by-game. Some games include categories that involve major jump errors that may include skipping all parts of the game using some distractions to pass levels that do not occur in the standard% speedrun without the use of major jump interruptions. An example of this is Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee in which a great run jump allows the runner to beat the game in 11 minutes.

The process must be done in their original console, or for PC games, on a particular PC configuration; running on the emulator is not allowed for many reasons, especially among them the difficulty in confirming that the breakout is not assisted by the tool. In-game disruptions and exploits are allowed; in some cases in games with severe disruption, no major major-skips categories are created. Non-cosmetic modifications to games and modifications to the console or controller are not allowed. Distractions triggered by disrupting the normal operation of the console or the game media during gaming, such as the N64 "cartridge bent" trick, are not allowed.

Operations are required to be recorded using live feed capture, typically using a capture card or DVD recorder. In some cases, runs may be rejected for poor video quality.

Charity work

After the initial meeting at MAGFest, the SDA community, inspired by TheSpeedGamers, started their first charity marathon in January 2010, titled Classic Games Finish Fast . The live feed-feed gameplay snippets and the runners' webcam footage are broadcast live on the SDA homepage. Marathon success, earning over $ 10,000 for CARE. Beginning in 2011, SDA started two annual marathons: Cool Games Finish Fast during winter, and Summer Games Finish Fast during the summer. Each subsequent marathon becomes much more successful than its last iteration, with AGDQ 2011 and AGDQ 2012 collecting $ 53,000 and $ 149,000 apiece for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

In April 2011, after the Great East Japan earthquake, SDA collected a marathon titled Japan Relief Done Quick . Marathons are executed by having every run-stream runner run them from their homes, rather than having everyone travel to a central location. JRDQ collects $ 25,000 for Doctors Without Borders.

During marathons, chip-in widgets are placed beneath the streaming video, which visually shows how much has been donated so far, and that lets people watch runs to donate money directly to charities via PayPal accounts. Sponsors who are given donations are given the option of sending messages to marathon participants to read during the stream, allowing them to vote with their donations, among other things, what games they want to play, what they want in a character game named, or ask the runner to perform certain feats such as difficult tricks or intrusions. Prizes are available throughout the marathon; all donors enter the lottery to win them as long as they meet the minimum amount of donations that vary within the timeframe for each prize. All donations are always taken into account in the main prize, but most other prizes require donations during certain game runs or themed games.

On January 27, 2013, SDA announced that AGDQ 2013 had collected $ 448,423.27, surpassing Desert Bus for a total of Hope 6 contributions of $ 443,165.29 to become the single most successful single-game marathon at the time. On August 1, 2013, SDA announced a total donation of $ 255,160.62 from the SGDQ marathon 2013. On January 16, 2014, SDA announced more than $ 1,025,000 donations collected from their 2014 AGDQ event. Summer Games Finish Rapid 2014, held from June 22-28, and raised over $ 718,000 for Doctors Without Borders.

It was determined that AGDQ 2015 garnered more than $ 1.5 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, after it was found that the problem with the tracker eliminated some $ 400,000 in user donations.
