History Edit

From the early 1900s, the island was known as Raz Island, named after the family who lived there. In the late 1930s, it was bought for $ 800 by a man named Delmar "Radio Nick" Nicholson, who named him "Idle Bay Isle" and lived there for 20 years with his wife and a crane. It was later sold, renamed "Riles Island," and used as a hunting ground. Disney bought it in 1965 as part of its strategic property acquisition before building Walt Disney World Resort.

The island was opened as "Treasure Island" on April 8, 1974, as a place to observe wildlife, and later renamed Discovery Island when it was recognized as a zoological park. Although Disney has never officially stated the reason for closing down the park, poor attendance and high maintenance costs, combined with the newer and larger Disney Animal Kingdom opened the year before, are the most likely cause. Discovery Island was closed to the public on April 8, 1999, but continued to operate until July 9, 1999, by which time all of its animals had been moved to the Disney Animal Kingdom (the center of Safari Villagenya named Discovery Island) and other zoos.

Since closing, the island has largely been abandoned, with no signs of development. By 2018, all the original buildings and attractions remain on the island, although some buildings are heavily damaged by hurricanes and natural decay. At one point, Disney was considered working with video game maker Cyst to create an interactive experience called "Myst Island". Guests will explore an unusual location and outline the mysteries about the island's inhabitants before. The development of this attraction never goes beyond the concept stage.

The island's facilities are the home of the last Dusky Seaside Sparrow known before dying in 1987. The subspecies were declared extinct in 1990. Today, Discovery Island is closed to the public. The island can be easily seen from Wilderness Lodge Disney, Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & amp; Camps, as well as from boat trips between them. It is adjacent to Disney's River Country, which closed in November 2001.
