A titer (or titer) is a way of expressing concentration. Titer tests use serial dilutions to obtain quantitative information estimates of analytical procedures that inherently only evaluate as positive or negative. The titers correspond to the highest dilution factor which still yields a positive reading. For example, a positive reading in the first 8 series of dilution is translated into titer 1: 256 (ie, 2 -8 ). Titer is sometimes expressed by the denominator only, for example 1: 256 written 256.
The term also has two contradictory meanings. In titration, the titer is the ratio between the actual and nominal concentrations of titrant, ie. a 0.5 titer would require 1/0,5 = 2 times more titrant than nominal. This is to compensate for possible degradation of the titrant solution. Secondly, in textile engineering, titer is a synonym for linear density.
