Mount Agung or Gunung Agung is a volcano in Bali, Indonesia, southeast of Mount Batur, also in Bali. Gunung Agung stratovolcano is the highest point in Bali. It dominates the surrounding area, affecting the climate, especially rainfall patterns. From a distance, the mountain looks very conical. From the top of the mountain, it is possible to see the summit of Mount Rinjani on the nearest island of Lombok, to the east, although the two mountains are often covered in clouds.

The Balinese believe that Mount Agung is a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe. The most important temple in Bali, Pura Besakih, lies on the slopes of Mount Agung.

Mount Agung is an active volcano, with large and deep craters that sometimes emit smoke and ash. The last eruption is in 2018, which is currently active.

Eruption

1843 eruption

The Great erupted in 1843, as noted in the report by Heinrich Zollinger:

"After a long period of inactivity, this year the mountain began to revive, and in the first days the earthquake shock activity was felt after it followed the emissions of ash, sand and rocks."

Error 1963-64

The 1963 eruption was one of the largest and most powerful eruptions in Indonesian history.

On February 18, 1963, local residents heard a loud explosion and saw a cloud rise from the crater of Mount Agung. On February 24, lava began to flow down the northern slopes of the mountain, eventually covering 7 km in the next 20 days. On March 17, a volcano erupted (VEI 5), sending debris 8 to 10 km into the air and producing a large pyroclastic flow. This stream destroyed many villages, killing about 1,100-1,500 people. Cold lava was caused by heavy rains after the eruption killed an additional 200. The second eruption on May 16 caused a pyroclastic flow that killed 200 other occupants. Small eruptions and streams followed and lasted almost a year.

Lava flows miss, sometimes just a few yards, the Temple of Mother Besakih. Saving the temple is considered by the Balinese as a miracle and signal from the gods that they want to show their strength but not destroy the monument that the Balinese have established.
