Mark Reynolds Hughes (January 1, 1956 - May 21, 2000) is an American businessman who is the founder, chairman and CEO of Herbalife International Ltd, a multi-level marketing company.

Mark Reynolds Hughes was born to Stuard Hartman's father (not "Stuart", per birth certificate) and mother of Jo Ann Hughes. His parents divorced in 1970, when Mark was 14 years old, and his mother retained custody of Mark.
At this point, the family survived with the payment of welfare with Hughes's mother who suffered "emotional problems." She struggles against obesity and tension through amphetamines and sleeping pills. In the ninth grade, Hughes dropped out of school and started using his own drugs. "I'm a bit naughty," he said. "I'm in trouble with the law." At the age of 16, he was sent to CEDU High School, a private residential school for troubled children in Running Springs, CA which originally returned to a cult founded in 1958. Part of CEDU rehab Hughes required him to raise money by selling raffle tickets. Hughes became the best school salesman. "The agreement is based on how much money you collect," Hughes told People magazine in 1985. "There's a lot of pressure, and I want to be the best right away."
Hughes is 19 years old and still works for CEDU when his mother died in his apartment due to an accidental drug overdose on April 27, 1975. According to an autopsy report, several empty prescription bottles were found beside his bed, and his doctor said his coroner was "known taking excessive prescription drugs. " Toxicological tests show the lethal levels of Darvon painkillers in the system.

Pre-Herbalife and first marriage
In 1976, 20-year-old Hughes began selling diet products to Seyforth Laboratories, a multilevel marketer, being one of the top 100 producers. After Seyforth collapsed in 1979, Hughes then sold training equipment and heavy-duty products for a company called Golden Youth, as well as a direct sales outfit. While working for the Golden Boy in 1979, Hughes met Kathryn Whiting, the first of four beauty pageant winners to marry on the beach. Whiting, the former "Miss Santa Monica," was then a 21-year-old student pursuing a degree in medicine. When the Golden Youth was out of business, Hughes decided to start his own operation.

In February 1980, 24, Hughes founded Herbalife International based in Los Angeles. Since then it has become one of the largest distributors of herbal products in the world through multi-level marketing, with sales of approximately $ 3.5 billion in 2007 and 2.1 million Independent Distributors. It is now in 95 countries and reaching record retail sales of $ 7.5 billion in 2013, according to a company statement.
In the mid-1980s, Hughes was sued by the Food and Drug Administration, the California attorney general's office, and the state Department of Health, for what they claimed to be false health claims about Herbalife products and the various schemes used to market them. Health agencies accuse companies of violating labeling standards and using improper sales practices.
The regulator argues that the company made a drug claim. The drugs are regulated by F.D.A., while nutritional supplements are not. Some health experts doubt the efficacy of Herbalife products, saying that in some cases they are too dependent on laxatives and caffeine.
In March 1985, California's attorney general and the state's Department of Health Service charged him and Herbalife with making "incorrect or misleading" product claims - especially those involving the caffeine content of some Herbalife products - and operating an "endless chain marketing scheme."
Requested by a complaint stating that users of Herbalife products suffer from illness and death, the US Senate subcommittee contacted Hughes before the trial in May. Referring to a panel of nutritionists who have criticized Herbalife in testimony the previous day, he asked the senators, "If they are experts in weight loss, why are they so fat?"
During the trial, Hughes acknowledged that his formal education ceased in grade 9. When asked during the trial how he could qualify to challenge a prominent medical expert, Hughes replied: "I am against anyone to be able to produce results like this company has."
Hughes reached a settlement with a regulatory body in 1986. To solve his problem with the state, Hughes agreed to pay $ 850,000. At that time, California attorney general John Van De Kamp was quoted in The Wall Street Journal as saying it was the largest settlement ever achieved from a healthcare product company.
In December 1991, Hughes' and his third wife, Suzan Hughes, had a son, Alexander Reynolds "Alex" Hughes.
Death
On the evening of Saturday, May 20, 2000, Hughes celebrated the 87th anniversary of his maternal grandmother, Hazel (known as Mimi). It was a private meeting with several family members joining him in his big house in Malibu for the night. From the public spotlight, Hughes drank white wine, smoked a cigar and played his drum set.
Hughes tried to buy all of Herbalife's extraordinary shares and made the company private once again. Stress and long hours have affected her health; he recovered from a recurrence of pneumonia. Treatment involves corticosteroids, which make sleep difficult. His doctor prescribed the drug doxepin, a tricyclic antidepressant, for insomnia.
On May 21, 2000, authorities said that Mark Hughes died of an accidental overdose after mixing alcohol with a "toxic" antidepressant. Scott Carrier, from the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, said the final autopsy finds that Hughes, 44, has ingested a combination of toxic alcohol and Doxepin, an antidepressant he drank to help him sleep. His blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.21.
Hughes's 9-year-old son, Alexander "Alex" Hughes, was named the sole recipient of his father's estate, which is estimated to be worth $ 400 million. Hughes will establish that, until Alex is 35, most of his legacy will be kept in trust managed by Hughes's father, Jack Reynolds, lawyer Conrad Klein, and Herbalife executive Christopher Pair. In 2006, the Los Angeles Superior Court decided to remove Reynolds from a $ 35 million custodian oversight after finding that he broke some wills law by handing over control to Klein and mixing Alex's personal assets with a partnership account. Reynolds is suspended, but remains one of three guardians until 2013, when a judge in a separate lawsuit orders a third abolition to violate the Trust's terms by mismanaging funds.
