Korea's presence in Indonesia is back several decades. Business and work

Most South Korean expatriates in Indonesia are employees of Korean multinational conglomerates with investments in Indonesia, or small and medium business owners. Working relationships in South Korean-owned factories were bad in the 1990s, but have improved in recent years.

Distribution

In 2005 there were about 30,000 South Koreans living in Indonesia, with most of them in the Jakarta area. The rest, 1,200 live in Surabaya, 600 live in Bandung, 150 live in Bali, and 550 live elsewhere.

The main areas of Korea in Jakarta are Cibubur in East Jakarta and Kelapa Gading and Sunter in North Jakarta. There are also Koreans in Bogor, Cikarang in Bekasi, and Tangerang. The majority of Bekasi Koreans work for the electronics industry. In Tangerang most Koreans work for manufacturing companies, especially those involved in shoe making, and many Korean-owned businesses are in Lippo Village (Lippo Karawaci). 80% of commercial buildings in Lippo Village are occupied by ethnic Koreans.

Further away from Jakarta, Koreans are also served by two other weekend schools, Surabaya Hangul School (established January 1, 1989, enrolling 42 students in kindergarten and elementary level), and Hangul School Bandung (founded March 1, 1992, register 66 students in kindergarten to high school level). Semarang is another area mentioned to have many Koreans, although they do not have a Korean language education facility there. Religion

The Directory of Korean Associations in Indonesia listed 14 Korean churches (from various denominations including Presbyterianism) and one Buddhist temple from Jogye Order in Jabodetabek region. Muslims form a smaller minority of Korean communities. The Indonesian branch of the Muslim Federation of Korea was opened in 1982; they sponsored 22 Muslims from South Korea to come to Indonesia as students in 1983 and 1984 to study at a local university and better understand Islam. According to their figures, in 2005, there were only 50 Korean Muslims in Indonesia, including those who had converted while living there.
