Controversy
Rice met former Senator Gary Hart at the 1986-87 Night Party at the Aspen, Colorado home of her boyfriend, rocker Don Henley. Rice then meets Hart in Miami, and declares that he is "very interested in getting funding". Immediately after meeting Rice, Hart announced that he would run for the Democratic presidential nomination. After enjoying a very strong campaign in 1984 against the eventual nominee, former Vice President Walter Mondale, he was widely regarded as the leading candidate for Democratic nomination in 1988. Soon rumors began circulating about him being the "eye basket" leads the candidate to invite the media to observe his public behavior, and also claims that whoever does it will be "very bored." However, he never intended to invite journalists to "hide in the shadows" of his home.
Reporters for Miami Herald, in a controversial move, stalk Rice on a flight from Miami to Washington, DC, and then risked Hart's townhouse after a phone call from someone trying to sell a picture of the trip. There, Jim McGee from Herald saw Hart and Donna Rice return to Hart's townhouse. The Herald later reported that Rice spent the night at Hart's residence, but later admitted that they did not see the back door to find out when she was leaving.
Their story was published the same day when the quote appeared in The New York Times Magazine. Subsequent reports sent media into a frenzy. While Hart argues that journalists can not know exactly when Rice arrived or why she was there, Rice declared the association innocent, and denied that she had slept at Hart's house, or that the relationship was sexual. Hart also denied the accuracy of the story.
However, Hart's popular appeal suffered, and a poll taken soon afterwards found him to be 10 points behind Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis in New Hampshire. On May 8, 1987, a week after his story broke out, Hart postponed his campaign after the Washington Post threatened to run the story of a woman Hart dated when parting with his wife, and his wife and daughter. being the same subject of interest to the tabloid newspaper.
Monkey Business Photo
On the cover of 2 June 1987, the celebrity tabloid National Enquirer published a photo of Rice sitting in Hart's lap. The couple were pictured on the dock, holding hands, during a cruise ship trip to Bimini that Hart, Rice and others took before he announced his campaign for the President of the United States. Hart wore a T-shirt inscribed with words Monkey Business, the name of the yacht. The photo was published with the title "Gary Hart Asked Me to Marry". It was published a few weeks after Hart suspended his campaign, but then collectively confused as an excuse for Hart's exit.
Rice and Hart have consistently denied that their relationship is sexual, and declares that they are just friends.
Aftermath
The huge publicity generated by the Hart scandal yielded many lucrative offers, and while Rice refused most - including one for an interview with Playboy magazine, an ABC movie of the week, a book and magazine offer - she did appear on 1987 as No Excuses jeans girl in advertisement and advertisement for No Excuses jeans. "A month after the scandal broke out, I tried to get back to work in a pharmaceutical company after my leave, but because of all the publicity and pressure and pressure generated, I finally resigned." A month after the scandal broke out, he began reconnecting with his Christian faith and then disappeared from the public eye for seven years. Rice lived in Los Angeles for a while, then moved to Washington, D.C. suburb of Northern Virginia in the early 1990s. There Rice married Jack Hughes, a businessman in May 1994.
