The departure tax is the fee charged (by various names) by a country when someone leaves the country.
Some countries charge departure taxes only when someone goes by air. Various rules apply to tax payments, including airport payments to people who will catch flights (sometimes only in local currency and sometimes by credit card), or by some prepay method, or may be charged to airlines and included in the price of airfare.
