Early life and career

Erwin Arnada was born on October 17, 1963 to Amin Ismail, a Minangkabau trader and part-time journalist, and his wife. The family owns several shops in Jakarta, including one in Block M and one in Tanah Abang. Started when he was in junior high school Arnada helped the family with the shops, using his spare time to read. Arnada was raised in a Muslim family and remains a devout Muslim.

Arnada attended the University of Indonesia, working in the field of Russian literature. He became interested in journalism through photography. After seeing the 1983 film Roger Spottiswoode Under Fire , followed by an American photojournalist covering the Nicaraguan Revolution, Arnada was applied to a photographer for the Kompas newspaper. After his application was denied, in 1986 Arnada found work with a football team based in Jakarta, Persija Jakarta. Journalism

Starting in 1989 Arnada started his apprenticeship with the Weekly Editor . He uses his position as a learning experience. Arnada served as a tabloid editor based in Jakarta Monitor between 1990 and 1991. The publication closed after publishing a controversial poll of the most respected readers; the poll shows the prophet of Islam Muhammad at number 10, under the singer dangdut Rhoma Irama.

In the mid-1990s, Arnada began working for the Indonesian Star, owned by the Ciputra family. He left the newspaper in 1999 when he considered the publication to devote too little space to music. He founded the Milenia Star that year, but in 2002 it was closed. She has worked extensively with MTV Indonesia and various new companies.

After the closing of Military Stars, Arnada began working with Indonesian filmmaker Rizal Mantovani, Jose Poernomo and Dimas Djayadiningrat to establish the Rexinema production company. The company's first production was Jelangkung in 2001; Arnada first received a credit for Plate Jelangkung in 2002, which he wrote and produced. Playboy Indonesia

Arnada began planning to establish Playboy Indonesia , the Indonesian version of the Playboy Playmate magazine , as a challenge. He considered the magazine more than "pornography," describing it as home to the "famous and award winning journalism piece" he wanted to bring to Indonesia. Arnada entered into a discussion with Christie Hefner, then Head of Playboy Enterprises, in November 2005. He received permission to publish an Indonesian edition in January of next year. The first edition was launched in April 2006 and does not feature nudity or a focus on sexuality. Instead, the models are fully dressed; The problem also includes an interview with author Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The articles then continue to deal with literature, as well as human rights and politics.

The magazine, however, is highly controversial. Before the publication of Muslim groups have expressed opposition. After publication begins, Playboy Indonesia offices are attacked, as do various printers. In one instance the Islamic Defenders Front attacked the Playboy Indonesia office in South Jakarta, causing the building to be evacuated. In May 2006, continuous protests have left magazines without offices. Bad publicity makes advertisers leave the magazine. Eventually the magazine closed after releasing ten issues, having moved to the predominantly Hindu island of Bali since the second edition, in June 2006.

For his role in Playboy Indonesia , Arnada's publications are under investigation. The researchers cited the publication of "pornographic" material, illegal in Indonesia, as evidence of criminal indecency. On trial in April 2007, the South Jakarta District Court rejected this claim; appeals at the Jakarta High Court confirmed this decision. After two years of appeals by the prosecutor, the case reached the Indonesian Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled against Arnada and sentenced him to two years in prison. In October 2010 Arnada was imprisoned at the Cipinang Penitentiary in Jakarta. He used this time to write three novels: Houses in a Thousand Waves ( Thousand Waves House ), Midnite in Nonsense Country ( in the Nonsense Land ), and Rabbit Versus Goliath .

Arnada was released in June 2011, after the Supreme Court agreed with his defense that the journalist's professional actions should be tried under the Press Code and not the Criminal Code. Many commentators, including Arnada, described it as a victory for the freedom of the state press. However, responding to the call that he is a hero, Arnada states "I am not a hero, or a victim. I am just another version of history"; he thinks his experience is less drastic than reporters elsewhere in the country. In an interview in 2013, Arnada stated that his detention had "silenced" his crazy ambitions ""; Arnada's friends claimed that he had greatly changed by the term.

Post-prison

Arnada released his novel House in Thousand Waves in early 2012; it was written while he was in prison. Set in Singaraja, Bali, the novel follows the friendship of two young people from different cultural backgrounds. He adapted the novel at the end of that year, serving as director and producer. The film was a critical success and was nominated for nine Citra Cups at the 2012 Indonesian Film Festival, including a Citra Cup for Best Director for Arnada. He won four, including Best Editing and Best Screenplay; Arnada lost the Best Director award for Herwin Novianto from The Land of Heaven... He said ( The Land of Heaven... They Say ).

In 2013 Arnada is married to Hevie Ursulla Arnada. The couple lives in Bali. Arnada has expressed interest in continuing his career as a novelist, ignoring journalism for offering "nothing new, nothing different." The film based on his life is planned by Playboy Enterprises' Alta Loma Entertainment.
