Makeup artist or makeup artist is an artist whose medium is the human body, applying makeup and prosthetics to others for theater, television, film, fashion, magazines and other productions similar all aspects of the modeling industry. Awards awarded to this profession in the entertainment industry include the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hair Beauty and even some entertainment industry awards such as Emmy Awards and Golden Globes. In the United States and elsewhere in the world, professional licenses are required by agents to enable them to employ MUA. Larger production companies have home makeup artists on their payroll even though most MUAs are generally freelancers and their time remains flexible depending on the project. The use of digital cameras may have made the use of bridal makeup more popular.

Dress makeup is used in magazine photography and also on the cornerstone of fashion. Avant-garde makeup is also a valid technique used for projects that require an experimental theme. Fashion makeup is also commonly used in television and movies starting for the ultimate natural look to more sophisticated applications such as color balance .
- Theater Makeup
The makeup stage is used as a method in conjunction with the stage lighting to highlight the faces of the actors to create the expression seen by the audience from a moderate distance. These often include defining the eyes and lips as well as the highlights and lowlights of the facial bones.
- Special makeup effect (makeup FX)
The use of special effects techniques enhances physical features to show metaphysical characteristics as well as fantasy makeup. The use of prosthetic and plaster casting is also required for projects involving non-human appearance. Accents such as blood and theatrical fluid are also techniques that apply to this type of makeup.
- Airbrushing
The use of airbrush which is a small air-operated device that sprayed various media products and water-based makeup with nebulized process. The earliest notes of this type of cosmetic application come from the 1925 film version, Ben-Hur, recently re-popularized by the rise of HDTV and digital photography, where cameras focus on higher detail depths. Liquid foundations that have high coverage but thin consistency are applied with airbrush for full coverage without large product buildup.

Bridal makeup is a new segment in the makeup artist repertoire. From ethnic, to glamorous, to contemporary, makeup artists are now an important part of wedding planning in Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

This is an art that involves the use of light reflectors and materials such as minerals to give the skin a perfect finish. It was developed due to the further development of high-definition medium and cost implications of airbrush makeup.

In 1955 Bollywood group Cine Costume Make-Up Artist & amp; Hair Dressers' Association (CCMAA) creates rules that do not allow women to get membership as a makeup artist. However, by 2014, India's Supreme Court ruled that this rule violates India's constitutional guarantees granted under Article 14 (right of equality), 19 (1) (g) (freedom to practice any profession) and Article 21 (right to liberty ). The Indian Supreme Court judges stated that the prohibition of makeup artist members does not have "rationale" for the purpose to be achieved and "unacceptable, unacceptable and inconsistent" with constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens. The court also found illegal rules mandating that for artists, women or men, to work in industry, they must have five years of domicile status in the country in which they intend to work. In 2015 it was announced that Charu Khurana has become the first woman to be registered by Cine Costume Make-Up Artist & amp; Hairdressing Association.
In June 2014, Cine Costume Make-Up Artist & amp; The Hairdressing Association (CCMAA) officially protested officially on the Bang Bang movie set! in protest from the foreign makeup artist Daniel Bauer works in the film for his lead actress Katrina Kaif. The CCMAA and its 15 members protested against the film set as Daniel Bauer not listed with the Union, although the Union banned foreign artists working in Bollywood. This problem was solved with CCMAA which gave Daniel Bauer full membership
