Glass Etching Made Easy....Using Your Cricut - YouTube

Glass etching consists of techniques of creating art on glass surfaces by applying acidic, caustic, or abrasive substances. Traditionally this is done after the glass is blown or cast, although the etchings have replaced some form of surface etching. The elimination of minute glass quantities causes a rough surface of characteristic and refined translucent glass qualities.

Technology

Various techniques are used to reach the surface engraved on glass, either for artistic effects, or simply to create a translucent surface.

acid etching is performed using hexafluorosilicic acid (H 2 SiF 6 ) which, when anhydrous, is colorless. Acid is prepared by dissolving silica in a hydroelectric acid mixture (hydrochloric acid), quartz powder, calcium fluoride, and concentrated sulfuric acid which is lowered after heating.

Glass etching cream is used by hobbyists because it is generally easier to use than acid. Available from art supply shops, it consists of fluoride compounds, such as hydrogen fluoride and sodium fluoride (which are still very dangerous). Since the type of acid used in this process is very dangerous, the abrasive method has gained popularity.

Abrasive blasting ("sandblasting") is another common technique for creating patterns in a glass, creating an "opaque" look on the glass. It is often used commercially. High pressure air is mixed with abrasive material cut across the glass surface to create the desired effect. The longer the airflow and abrasive materials are focused on one point, the deeper the cut.

Leptat glass is a glass that has been etched using a patented acid process. Leptat takes its name from the Czech word meaning "to etch", because the technique is inspired by the Bohemian glass exhibit, Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia) seen at the World Exposition in Osaka, Japan, and patented in the United States by Bernard. E. Gruenke, Jr. from Conrad Schmitt Studios. Abstract, figural, contemporary, and traditional designs have been executed in Leptat glass. Secondary designs or patterns are sometimes engraved lighter into negative areas, for further benefit. Gold leaf or colored enamel can also be decorated to highlight the design. The Leptat technique allows glass to reflect light from many surfaces, such as gem gems.

Mold etching In the 1920s an etch-molding process was created, in which art was etched directly into the mold, so that each cast part emerged from the mold with a texture already on the glass surface. This reduced production costs and, combined with the use of wider colored glass, led to cheaper glassware in the 1930s, which came to be known as Depression glass.

Etching Frost is the process by which the vinyl window material is truncated to produce a pattern and then applied to the window to give a blurry pattern effect.
