Marketing and sales growth

Lenovo has adopted an aggressive strategy to replace Samsung as China's top mainland smartphone manufacturer. The company spent $ 793.5 million in Wuhan to build a factory that can produce 30 to 40 million phones per year. Data from Analysys International shows that Lenovo's Chinese smartphone sales are growing substantially in 2012. Lenovo's market share increased to 14.2 percent during the third quarter of 2012, representing an increase of more than 4.8 percent sales growth in the same quarter of 2011 IDC analysts say that Lenovo's success is due to "enhancement and enhancement of aggressive channel partnerships." Analysts of international analyst Wang Ying wrote, "Lenovo has a clear advantage over competitors in terms of sales channels." The company's CEO Yang Yuanqing said, "Lenovo does not want to be a second player... we want to be the best Lenovo has the confidence to outperform Samsung and Apple, at least in the Chinese market."

Yang Yuanqing said that Lenovo's strategy for Lenovo devices dictates the emphasis on China's domestic market and emerging markets such as Russia, Indonesia, India and the Middle East. Lenovo plans a significant product launch in the market in 2013. That said Lenovo pursued this strategy because the thin profit margin before taxes was only 2.6%. He said, "If you do not have enough scale, if you do not have enough volume, it is difficult to make money. If you do not have enough market share, it is difficult to make money," Yuanqing said. "That's why we enter the market one by one. When we enter the market, we want to quickly gain a double-digit market share."

The LePhone, as a Lenovo smartphone called in China, is offered at a relatively low price point and tailored for the Chinese market. LePhone benefits from strong support from Chinese mobile operators and content providers such as Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent. After seeing rapid growth in China's smartphone market, Lenovo has embarked on an effort to increase its share in the high-end market by working with Taiwan's chipmaker MediaTek in 2012 According to IHS iSuppli, Lenovo is the top three smartphone maker in China with 16.5 market share percent in the first quarter of 2012. According to May 2012, the report released by IDC Lenovo ranks fourth in the global tablet market by volume. In November 2012, Lenovo became the second largest mobile phone seller in China when measured by volume.

Lenovo plans to release its smartphone in Nigeria in the second half of 2013 in an effort to find a market where it can sell directly to consumers. Lenovo chose Nigeria, because unlike South Africa and other African countries, there is no requirement to partner with a local telecommunications company to sell its phones. Lenovo will sell six phones in its price segment with the most expensive sales of around US $ 500. Lenovo says it is investigating other parts of Africa and that Egypt will be the next target for expansion.

Lenovo began selling smartphones in Kazakhstan in November 2013. That same month, Lenovo announced that it would start selling phones in at least 20 new markets "within the next few quarters." Lenovo says these markets will cover the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Yang Yuanqing said that Lenovo decided to accelerate expansion after the success in Indonesia where Lenovo grabbed 13 percent market share in one year while achieving a higher profit margin than those obtained in China.

Lenovo sold about 50 million smartphones in 2013. That same year, Lenovo boosted its smartphone sales by 60% from 2012. Most of this sales took place in China where lower and middle-grade smartphones are still in great demand.

Lenovo has assembled a team of senior managers who are familiar with the Indian market, launching mobile phones at all price points there, and working on branding and marketing to build market share. In February 2014, Lenovo claimed that smartphone sales in India had increased 100% per quarter while the market grew only 15-20% over the same period. Lenovo conducted a smartphone marketing test in November 2012 in Gujarat and several cities in the south, where Lenovo already has a strong presence. The Lenovo strategy has created awareness, maintains various phone options at all price points, and develops distribution networks. Lenovo partnered with two national distributors and over 100 local distributors. In February 2014, more than 7,000 retail outlets in India sold Lenovo smartphones. Lenovo also partnered with HCL to establish 250 service centers in 110 cities.

In March 2014, Lenovo announced it would release a smartphone in the UK. Lenovo said that the launch will go forward regardless of whether the deal to buy Motorola won regulatory approval. In March 2014, Lenovo worked with Vodafone and other carriers to ensure that their phones are compatible with their networks. Lenovo expects to release its first UK-intended product at the IFA trade show in Germany in September 2014. Lenovo says that entering the UK market will take about nine months due to the fact that most of the UK phones are sold under service contracts. Operators have strict requirements for the phones they sell. Lenovo plans to use its current distributor, Exertis Micro-P, Ingram Micro, and Tech Data to sell its mobile phone.

At the end of April 2014, Lenovo announced that it projected sales of 80 million smartphones worldwide in the fiscal year starting April 1. Lenovo says it expects smartphones and tablets to boost its profits by 2014. Yang Yuanqing said, "We have to look beyond China for greater market share and higher profit margins." He also stated that adding that partnership with Google, owner of the Android operating system is getting stronger due to the acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

In the fourth quarter of 2014, Motorola's sales grew 118% year-on-year by unit. Lenovo generally maintains the geographical separation of the "Lenovo" and "Motorola" brands on smartphones. For example, Japan where in May 2015, no brand of mobile phones sold, will be reserved exclusively for Motorola. In China, the two brands were sold after Motorola reintroduced the smartphone after a two-year hiatus. Both brands are also sold in India. Lenovo announced in April 2015, that both brands will continue to operate separately in India.

Branding

The series of "Le" devices, including LePhone, LePad, and LeTV are sold under the "idea" brand outside China. LePhone became known as "ideaphone" in other markets. Pre-fix "Le" means "happy" in Mandarin and this branding is only used in Mainland China.

In early 2013, Lenovo signed a support deal with Kobe Bryant. Lenovo said Bryant was chosen to further internationalize its brand while appealing to young consumers. Bryant made many appearances on behalf of Lenovo and is a major smartphone marketing campaign this year in Asia.

Mergers, acquisitions, subsidiaries, and partnerships

Lenovo sold its mobile division in 2008 to focus on personal computer business and then paid $ 200 million to buy it back in November 2009. Lenovo bought back its mobile division to focus on mobile internet devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.

Motorola Mobility

On January 29, 2014, Google announced it would sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo for US $ 2.91 billion in cash and stock transactions. When Google and Lenovo first announced the acquisition of Motorola, they said the purchase would be funded with $ 660 million in cash, $ 750 million in Lenovo shares, and a $ 1.5 billion promissory note that matures in three years. In February 2014, Google had about 5.94% of Lenovo's shares. The deal includes smartphone lines like Motorola Moto X and Moto G and Droid Maxx. Lenovo also acquired Motorola Mobility roadmap in the future. Google will maintain Advanced Technology & amp; The project unit and all except 2000 corporate patents. Larry Page from Google said of the sale that "the smart phone market is very competitive, and growing, helping to be versatile when building mobile devices. That's why we believe that Motorola will be better served by Lenovo - which has a fast growing smartphone business and is the largest (and fastest growing) PC manufacturer in the world. "

Yang Yuanqing stated that "iconic acquisition of brands, innovative product portfolios, and highly talented global teams will soon make Lenovo a strong global competitor in smartphones." Who also said, "Do not be afraid of losing $ 1 billion a year.We will fix it even from day one, Google is excellent in software, ecosystems and services but we are stronger in making devices." Yang said that Lenovo will make Motorola is profitable in six quarters.

In March 2014, Yang Yuanqing said that Lenovo will continue to use Motorola's brand name. Yang said that he wanted to capitalize on Motorola's reputation as an excellent manufacturer in the North American and European markets. He uses the term "mind share." Yang said that Lenovo plans to tie himself up with Motorola in the minds of consumers with tag lines like "Motorola by Lenovo" or "A Lenovo Company." As of May 2014, Lenovo is the fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world with unit sales, placing it behind Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. However, Lenovo owes most of its mobile phone market share to China, which is the world's largest market for mobile devices. According to reports, Lenovo has received about 2 million orders of smart phones from China.

Lenovo believes that Motorola will help put it on the map as a maker of mobile devices in developed markets like the United States and Europe. Yang Yuanqing said, "Motorola is a good brand with awareness around the world. This is a company that creates mobile phones, not just smartphones.Com Motorola will give us a good retail relationship. He has a strong IP portfolio and rights and will help us become wrong one clear global leader. We will not be satisfied with number three, we will want to be number two in the future. "

Lenovo has expressed interest in acquiring Motorola's hardware business as soon as it was acquired by Google. Three years later, Lenovo's successful offer for Motorola Mobility began with a phone call from Eric Schmidt, asking if Lenovo was still interested in the acquisition. Lenovo immediately expressed interest. Liu Jun, executive vice president at Lenovo responsible for mobile devices, said, "We first approached Moto when Google first announced the acquisition.Google is the owner of Android and we thought it might not want to have the hardware side of the business," said Liu Jun, President of EVP from mobile to Lenovo to TechRadar. For us, it's clear that Google wants to have IP. So we thought we had a chance to have a hardware side. Google initially tried to do the hardware itself but then a year and a half later they reconsidered their strategy. Late last year we got a call from Google, from Eric Schmidt. We were asked if we still had any interest. We always thought Motorola was a good purchase so we said yes and signed the contract quickly. "

In April 2014, Lenovo announced that the first smartphone developed jointly with Motorola will be released in October or November of the same year. Since the announcement of the acquisition by Lenovo, Motorola Mobility has focused on rapidly increasing sales value through aggressive online promotions in the United States, Brazil, Mexico and India. In 2014, Motorola has increased its sales in India to at least one million smartphones every quarter through collaboration with Indian e-commerce company Flipkart.

As of November 2014, Lenovo and Motorola brands have combined 7.8% of global smartphone shipments, making Lenovo the third largest company in the market. Motorola is key to Lenovo's strategy to expand overseas to avoid slowing growth in China's smartphone market. Lenovo plans to introduce Motorola products in China where they will be positioned as a high-end brand. Motorola smartphones have a higher profit margin than Lenovo branded phones and thus will increase revenue. As of November 2014, Lenovo and Motorola are discussing how to use the Lenovo factory to produce multiple phones. This will help reduce costs by enabling Motorola to use the well-developed Lenovo supply chain to cut costs for components such as camera modules. This in turn could enable Motorola to improve its products without raising prices.

ZUK

ZUK Mobile is a subsidiary of Lenovo that sells exclusively using its own brand. Each letter "ZUK" is pronounced separately. ZUK was originally dubbed Shenqi. ZUK is part of Lenovo's strategy to sell higher-quality and higher devices with "refreshed young brands". Xiaomi is considered the main competitor of ZUK. ZUK will market its products to the world.

NEC

In April 2014, Lenovo purchased a patent portfolio from NEC associated with mobile technology. This includes more than 3,800 patent families in countries around the world. This purchase covers the standard base patents for 3G and LTE cellular technologies and other patents related to smartphones and tablets.

JD.com

In May 2014, Lenovo announced what it called a "strategic deal" with Chinese e-commerce company JD.com. Lenovo and JD.com signed a 12 billion yuan Chinese contract that includes joint product development, marketing, internet-based promotion, post-sales logistics, and post-sales services. Operation

In May 2012, Lenovo announced an investment of US $ 793 million in the construction of mobile phone research and development facilities and factories in Wuhan, China. The facility, called the Lenovo Industrial Base, is scheduled to begin operation in October 2013. In March 2014, Lenovo renamed its mobile device division to Mobile Business Group. It was formerly known as Mobile Internet and Digital Home Group.

In August 2015, Lenovo announced that except for ZUK, all of its mobile phone businesses would be folded into Motorola Mobility. The Lenovo brand name is no longer used on smartphones. This step is part of Lenovo's strategy to reduce its product line while improving quality. Other Chinese mobile phone makers like ZTE, Huawei, and Coolpad are pursuing the same strategy and have given up releasing dozens, sometimes hundreds of models per year. Smartphone makers respond to weak demand due to market saturation; unit volume decreased 21.9% in China's mobile phone market in 2014, according to the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Research.

Lenovo produces smartphones like the second generation Moto E and Lenovo K3 Note in Chennai, India under contract with Flextronics. Until August 2015, the Lenovo plant in Chennai can generate six million phones per year. The Chennai facility only produces for Indian market. This employee is 1,500 people.

Many press reports indicate that Lenovo plans to release phones based on Microsoft Windows Phone. The Windows-based phone from Lenovo will be a potentially formidable competitor to the Nokia Lumia smartphone line.

At Mobile World Congress in February 2014, Microsoft announced Lenovo as one of the new Windows Phone 8.1 OEMs; but it was not until March 2015 when Microsoft officially confirmed that Lenovo will produce at least one Windows smartphone in time for the launch of Windows 10 Mobile.

Lenovo invested 100 million yuan in funds dedicated to provide initial funding for mobile application development for LeGarden online application store available for Chinese users. In 2010, LeGarden has more than 1,000 programs available for download to LePhone users. At the same time, LeGarden counted 2,774 individual developers and 542 development companies as members.

Lenovo uses the MediaTek turnkey chipset that allows mobile phone manufacturers to focus on improving industrial design and software while reducing costs. In November 2013, Lenovo has released four phones using the MediaTek chipset. Lenovo also has what is called a "strong relationship" with Intel and Qualcomm.

The Lenovo Smartphone supports GSM standards, the original Chinese TD-SCDMA 3G standard used by China Mobile, the WCDMA 3G standard used by China Unicom, and China Telecom's CDMA 2000 network.
