Chancellor Jonathan Bennett (born April 16, 1993), known professionally as Chance the Rapper , is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, philanthropist and record producer from the West Chatham Neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. In 2013, he started getting recognition after releasing his second mix album, Acid Rap . Apart from his solo career, he is a member of Collective SaveMoney collective (along with collaborator Vic Mensa). He has worked as a lead vocalist for the band The Social Experiment; they released their album Surf in May 2015.

In May 2016, Bennett released his third mixtape Dyeing Book for critical acclaim. This earned him three Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album. Coloring Book became the first streaming-first album to receive a nomination for, and won, a Grammy.

Chancellor Jonathan Bennett was born in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Ken Williams-Bennett, was an assistant to Chicago's former mayor Harold Washington and then Senator Barack Obama. Bennett started listening to hip-hop after hearing "Through the Wire" by Kanye West on the radio while walking through Hyde Park, Chicago. After learning the song on the Western debut album The College Dropout , Bennett bought the album, making it the first hip-hop album Bennett listened to. Bennett thought West was very influential to him and said he was inspired to start knocking by the West. Bennett and West meet each other in August 2014 at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.

Bennett started knocking in sixth grade when his cousin let him start using his studio. In his first year at Jones College High School, Bennett formed a duo of hip-hop duo with a friend. Many of Chance's early shows took place at the Lymic Lyricist Loft at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago. After taking second place in the local songwriting contest, Bennett met with Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley who enjoyed the music. Bennett spent much of his year and a small number of his senior year writing drafts for his debut project, 10 Days , which was released after Bennett was suspended for ten days after being caught smoking marijuana.

Music career

2011-2012: Early career and 10 Days

In high school Jones College Prep, some of his teachers make fun of his aspirations to become a musician. After a 10-day suspension in early 2011, during his senior year, having a marijuana on campus, Bennett recorded his first long project, a mixtape titled 10 Days (also known as # 10days ). In December 2011, he released a song titled "Windows", and announced his project 10 Days . In February 2012, Bennett was highlighted as one of the "10 New Chicago Rappers to Look For" by Complex magazine. Bennett said he spent "about eight months recording, writing and connecting from hunger to putting things out". Bennett released mixtape on April 3, 2012, and has since been downloaded more than 500,000 times via Datpiff's shared-mixtape site. 2012-2015: Acid Rap and The Social Experiment

In July 2012, Bennett appeared in the sixth compilation of Childish Gambino's fragile, Royalty , on the "They Do not Like Me" track. Gambino will continue to ask Bennett to join his first North American concert tour as his opening act.

On April 30, 2013, Bennett released their second mixtape, Acid Rap , in DatPiff. The record has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times. Bennett lists guest appearances from Twista, Vic Mensa, Saba, BJ the Chicago Kid, Action Bronson, Childish Gambino and Ab-Soul. Acid Rap was well received by critics. During the fall of 2014, Bennett and other artists participated in the Verge Campus tour. In November 2014, Bennett was awarded the "Best Youth of the Year" Award from Chicago by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

In August 2017, Bennett underwent the third day of Lollapalooza at Grant Park in his hometown of Chicago. His performance attracted many viewers with some estimates making him the biggest show in the event's history.

In November 2017, Bennett curated and led the Obama Foundation community event at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The event covered the inaugural Obama Summit event featuring special guests including former President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Andra Day, Gloria Estefan, Aziz Ansari, Lena Waithe, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and more.

Personal life

Bennett lives in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Bennett once shared a home in North Hollywood with James Blake. Describing his time in North Hollywood, Bennett calls it "lawless". After graduating from high school, Bennett attended a community college for a week before dropping out of school. Bennet has taken many drugs during his lifetime, including LSD and Xanax, but has since moved away from them.

Activism and politics

Bennett is an independent voter leaning to the left. His father worked for Barack Obama as a presidential candidate and as a helper. His father also worked on Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2008 and was Rahm Emanuel's assistant. Despite his family ties to the Democratic Party, Bennett is an independent voter, although he has a history of supporting Democrats. After tweet Kanye West defended Donald Trump and announced his support in April 2018, Bennett tweeted "Blacks Do not Have to Be Democrats." The tweet garnered controversy from Bennett's main left-wing fanbase. Trump then tweeted thanked Bennett even though Bennett dismissed Trump's praise.
