Photography Guide for Indonesian Birds is the first and so far the only photography guide for the birds of the Republic of Indonesia. In fact, it is the only book of birds covering this great country as an entity, a country with more than 250 million people and more endemic and endangered species globally than any other in the world.

History

This book was first published in 2001 by Periplus Editions (HK) Ltd. Production and editorial work is done by Berkeley Books Pte Ltd in Singapore. The publisher is Eric Oey; Julia Walkden and Rod Ritchie are the editors. Dr. Bas van Balen advises as a scientific editor. The binding on the first edition is a regular paperback cover with a collage of six different birds.

The first edition was 190 mm high and 125 mm wide, weighing 575 grams. In this edition Morten Strange is credited with text and photos. It includes 686 species; largely illustrated by the authors; about 30 other bird photographers provide additional images. Both the first and second editions of this book have two species of birds displayed per page, each with one or more photos and distribution maps. Taxonomy and nomenclature in the first edition follow the Birds of Indonesia: Checklist by Peter Andrew from 1992; this is a list of the most frequently used checks of the time, using a sequence called 'hype-last'. This book is a companion for the Photography Guides for Southeast Asian Birds published the year before, in 2000. However, this book uses a different list as a reference in the buntings last order.

Photography Guides for Indonesian Birds are reprinted several times over the following years, but without corrections or updates. In 2003, it was co-published in agreement with Princeton University Press for the US market and Christopher Helm (a print from A & C Black Publishers Ltd) for the UK market; some of these traces may still appear as copies used on internet book sites. Periplus distributed the book in Asia and in Indonesia, where it sold well. In 2012 a lot of new information and photography material about the Indonesian birds has emerged, and work on the second edition begins. Editorial work is again conducted in Singapore under the supervision of Nancy Goh at Berkeley Books Pte Ltd. The second edition involves a total change of material; the new checklist is used based on the 2007 Climate Checklist of Birds of the World 6th Edition. This list has 1,605 bird species for Indonesia, while the 1992 list has 1,534. It also uses the 'buntings last' sequence which means that the Indonesian book now uses the same sequence as the companion volume Photography Guide for Southeast Asian Birds . However, when Southeast Asia came out in 2012 with just a cover and a new trail, Indonesia came out that year in the second edition and dramatically changed.

The new cover is a flexibound vinyl that extends over the content page. There is one cover photo; this book is published using the Tuttle Publishing trail. Periplus Editions (HK) Ltd is now the sole distributor of this book. In this edition, Morten Strange is credited as a writer but not with text and photos, as only about 50% of his photographs are now his. In the second edition, new photographers such as James Eaton, Robert Hutchinson, Pete Morris and Bram Demeulemeester are major contributors of new species, rare and endemic. Filip Verbelen, who also contributed to the first edition, is now on the side of the author as a major contributor. More than 40 photographers of birds participated in the project, including a new Indonesian field researcher. The second edition expanded from 416 to 544 pages and now weighs 780 grams and represents 912 species, of which 213 is endemic (found only in Indonesia). As such, it is the most comprehensive bird photography guide to any country in the world. In the second edition the opening chapters have been completely re-written and updated; this book now also includes annotated checklists of all species in Indonesia, covered in the photographic section highlighted in the full checklist at the back of the book.

In 2014, the book was reprinted with corrections and updates. Additional 37 photos are replaced with new and better ones; the wrong birds identified (Flores-eagle eagles) are renamed, and other species (Sumatran laughter) are divided into endemics following the latest taxonomy. Status threats and icons for all globally threatened species are revised, and annotations in checklists are updated for each subregion using the latest available information.

In 2015, the book is reprinted again. In this reprint, two photos are replaced and all nomenclature, taxonomy, distribution data and global threat status are updated throughout this book. The total number of species in the checklist was revised upwards to 1,608 species.
