The 2009 Jakarta Bombings is a terrorist attack that took place in Jakarta, Indonesia on July 17, 2009. At around 07:47 to 00:57 GMT (00: 47-00: 57 UTC), the JW Marriott Hotel and The Ritz-Carlton in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, was hit by a five-minute separate bombing. Nine people were killed, three of whom were Indonesians, three Australians, two from the Netherlands, and one from New Zealand. More than 50 people were injured in the blast. Both explosions were caused by a suicide bomber, who entered the hotel as a paying guest a few days earlier. Twin suicide bombings occurred four years after the previous serious terrorist attacks in Indonesia.

Since the 2002 Bali bombings, where 202 people have been killed, Indonesia has stepped up efforts to crack down on terrorism. The anti-terrorism law was confirmed by the Indonesian legislature in 2003. The 2002 attack was carried out by Jemaah Islamiyah, a group previously linked to al-Qaeda and then to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and seeks to unite Indonesia, Malaysia and the southern Philippines as an Islamic state.
Marriott was previously the target of a suicide bombing in 2003.

Attack
The Marriott bomb happened first and followed five minutes later by the Ritz bombing. Police move to cover the surrounding area. At noon local time, an unexploded bomb was found in room 1808 of the Marriott, along with bomb-making equipment.
The Ritz-Carlton blast is thought to have originated from Airlangga Restaurant on the second story, where people eat breakfast. Something is said glass everywhere. The facade of the Ritz Carlton was fascinated by the explosion and the windows had been blown up.
The Marriott bomb occurred during one of a series of periodic breakfast meetings of CEO and other prominent Jakarta business community members (and most expatriates) hosted by James Castle, president of AmCham Indonesia, a branch of the United States Chamber of Commerce in Jakarta. The Marriott bomb was blown up in a small breakfast room rented for the event, and not in the main restaurant. One witness said the adjacent Mutiara Plaza building lobby was destroyed in the blast.
The unexploded bomb in room 1808 of the JW Marriott hotel was programmed to leave before another bomb there, but the timer was not working. Indonesian police believe the bomb was intended to create a panic atmosphere, causing guests to flee their rooms to get out of the hotel, and produce a significant crowd in the lobby. Had this happened as planned, the lobby bomb might have taken a much larger victim.
Victim
There were nine casualties; three Australians, one New Zealand, two Dutch tourists, and three Indonesians (including two suicide bombers). The dead Australians were Austrade officer Craig Senger, mining executive Garth McEvoy and businessman Perth Nathan Verity. New Zealand Tim Mackay dies; he is the president and director of PT Holcim Indonesia and the main seaman. Indonesians killed include Evert Mokodompis, a waiter at the JW Marriott Hotel.
Sixteen foreigners are hospitalized at the Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC). A resident of New Zealand, Canada, India and 3 Dutchmen were reportedly injured.
Investigation
Police believe the bombing plan was led by Noordin Mohammad Top. The first meeting was held on 30 April. Ibrohim, a florist who works for a florist company that owns a shop in both the bombed hotels, is another important organizer. Ibrohim was recruited in 2000 by Saifudin Jaelani, his brother-in-law, when he worked as a florist at the Mulia Hotel in Jakarta. In 2005, Ibrohim and Jaelani were unveiled as members of Noordin's special forces. Ibrohim set up strategies, conducted site surveys and smuggled bombs into hotels. Saifudin Jaelani is also believed to be recruiting suicide bombers for the operation.
The bombs were smuggled into the JW Marriott the day before the explosion through the hotel loading dock using pickup trucks hired by Ibrohim. The design of unexploded bombs and explosive materials was discovered by Police in room 1808 identical to that used by Jemaah Islamiyah in previous attacks.
The suicide bomber at the JW Marriott Hotel is Dani Dwi Permana, a private high school graduate in Bogor, West Java, 18 years old. The suicide bomber at the Ritz-Carlton hotel is Nana Ikhwan Maulana, a 28-year-old former resident of Pandeglang, Banten. Dani rented room 1808 at JW Marriott. The room was paid by Amir Abdillah, who was arrested on 5 August.
On August 7, police raided a house in Temanggung, Central Java. Three people were arrested and one was killed, later identified as Ibrohim. On August 8, police raided a house in Bekasi, West Java, killing two people believed to be preparing to attack Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with a truck bomb near his personal residence in Bogor, West Java.
Funding for the bombing is believed to have been provided from the Middle East. A number of suspects, including a Saudi national, have been arrested by the Indonesian police for their involvement in handling the funds.
Aftermath
The bombing was regretted by many governments - in Indonesia, elsewhere in the region, and around the world. US President Barack Obama, who spent part of his childhood in Jakarta, said: "I strongly condemn the attacks that occurred this morning in Jakarta, and extend my deepest condolences to all the victims and their loved ones. The US government stands ready to help the Indonesian government responded and recovered from these embarrassing attacks as friends and partners. "
Manchester United, who had been scheduled to play an exhibition football match in Jakarta on July 20, 2009 and had booked a room at the Ritz Carlton, canceled a tour of Jakarta from his tour.
Reopening
The hotel was closed for 2 weeks and reopened to the public on Monday, August 3, 2009 at 10:00 pm. The 17th US Ambassador to Cameron R. Hume in Indonesia attended the reopening of Hotel J.W. Marriott and Ritz Carlton on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 in Jakarta. Ambassador visited both hotels.
