Amazon Pay Evolution

Amazon Pay has undergone many changes in its evolution to improve online payment processing for Amazon customers on external websites. While Amazon Pay is the latest product, it is the culmination of previous trial and error products, and strategic acquisitions.

Checkout by Amazon (CBA)

CBA is an Ecommerce solution that allows web merchants to receive Amazon account information and use Amazon for payment processing. CBA can manage multiple aspects of the transaction including order processing, promotional discounts, shipping rates, sales tax calculations, and high sales. Depending on the needs of the merchant, CBA can be integrated into the merchant system with manual processing (via Central Seller) or via a downloadable SOAP API or CSV file. CBA also claims to reduce bad debt due to Amazon's fraud detection capabilities. The CBA is not continued in the UK and Germany in 2016 and is set to stop in the US in April 2017.

FPS is an Amazon Web Service that enables the transfer of money between two entities using technology built on a single, double, and unlimited use payment token. Merchants govern the use of these services through APIs or solution providers and access accounts through merchant accounts on the Amazon Payments website. The service was launched as a limited beta in August 2007, and later in February 2009 was promoted to General Availability [6]. FPS is different from CBA because FPS does not handle additional capabilities associated with order processing such as promotions, taxes and shipments. FPS also provides payment processing for DevPay Services Amazon Web Services (https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/make-money-fast/) but discontinued on June 1, 2015.

Amazon in 2013 acquired GoPago (mPayment) technology and recruited their engineering and product teams. Amazon is interested in mobile payment business. The GoPago app allows buyers to order and pay for goods and services before they arrive at a business.

Security

On September 22, 2010, Amazon published security advisors related to security gaps in the Amazon Payments SDKs. This defect allows malicious shoppers to shop for free at web stores using the SDK. Amazon mandated all web shops to upgrade to the new SDK before November 1, 2010. Amazon admits security researcher Rui Wang to find this bug. Details of this flaw are documented in the paper "Free Online Shopping - Security Analysis from Cashier-based Web Shops as a Service" by Rui Wang, Shuo Chen, XiaoFeng Wang, and Shaz Qadeer.
